l. The basal fluid and caloric intakes of Meriones unguiculatus were studied under conditions of ad lib. fresh water, progressively higher concentrations of NaCl, water deprivation, and rehydration. 2. Mean fluid consumption of fresh water was 963 f S.D. 1.95 per cent body weight per day, and caloric intake averaged 40.32 + 4.92 kcal/lOO g body weight per day when fed oven-dried Lab Chow. Total free and metabolic water intake combined averaged 13.3 per cent body weight per day. 3. Both fluid and food intakes declined with increasing concentrations of NaCl. 4. M. u~~~~lu~~ was very tolerant of highly concentrated salt solutions. Body weights were stable at molarities as high as 0.75, and some metabolically useful water was extracted from solutions as concentrated as 1 a25 M. 5. Weight losses of up to 47.8 per cent were tolerated before death; these are among the highest values recorded for small mammals. 6. Rehydration was initially rapid, but was not completed at the end of a 12-day exposure to free water. 7. The performance of M. unguiculatus is compared to that of other desert and non-xerically adapted species that have been similarly tested.
